The ABSCH is an association of bilingual schools with similar educational aims, which promotes good educational practice, constructive pupil interaction in cultural and sporting events, and the professional enrichment of staff through progressive in-service training programmes.

Introduction

In the mid seventies several schools with British backgrounds were seeking ways to strengthen their institutions and improve their standards, while at the same time offering a wider range of activities for their students.

As a result, on 25 November 1977 the Association of British Schools in Chile (ABSCH) was formed with seven founding members. There are now twenty one member schools: twuelve in Santiago, four in Viña del Mar, one in Casablanca, two in Concepción, one in Punta Arenas and one in Antofagasta. These schools bring together over 1,800 teachers and 19,000 pupils, between the ages of 4 and 18. Some of the schools offer the International Baccalaureate programme and IGCSE/AICE.

Mission

The mission of the Association of British Schools in Chile (ABSCH) is to encourage and support member schools in their endeavour to provide an education of quality that reflects the best of British practice, in co-operation with one another, and with Chilean and British educational authorities.

AIMS

The principal aims of the Association are:
  1. To foster an active spirit of co-operation and shared values, by providing a range of activities for students that includes among others: sports, music, science, chess, art, creative writing and drama.
  2. To provide continuous professional development for teachers through in-service courses and other educational opportunities.
  3. To secure support from other institutions to further the educational aims and practices of the Association.
  4. To exercise a positive influence upon the development of education within the wider spectrum of Chilean schools outside the Association.
